CHAIR ART PROJECT – Griffith Barracks MDS, Dublin

The Chair Project at Griffith Barracks MDS was a creative community initiative, led by multidisciplinary artist Paula Mongey and school creative lead Jenny Cronin. Involving 15 parents, 21 staff members, and 381 students, the project upcycled old wooden school chairs that were destined for the dump into unique pieces of art.
In the hands of the students and community, each chair was repurposed, reflecting not only their creativity but also the rich history they held. Every student contributed to the transformation, adding their personal touches to create unique pieces of art. The project culminated in an exhibition on Thursday, 8th June, where 16 chairs were showcased, each telling a story of creativity, heritage, and community. Filmed by RTE’s NewsToday and This is Art, the project captured the schools uplifting journey of repurposing forgotten chairs into enduring works of art.
