WHAT IS PINK?
What Is Pink? Exploring Our Relationship with the World of Colours
A Cruinniú na nÓg 2022 event at Scoil Naomh Maelruain, Old Bawn, Tallaght, Dublin 12 and Gaelscoil Eiscir Riada, Lucan, Co. Dublin.
‘What Is Pink?’ was a thought-provoking series of creative workshops designed to explore gender stereotypes through the lens of colour. Drawing inspiration from Christina Rossetti’s poem What is Pink?, the workshops combined art, drama, sound, movement, poetry, and spoken word to answer the questions students had about gender identity and the societal associations with colour.
The workshops provided a space for open conversation, allowing students to engage with and discuss their thoughts on gender, challenging traditional stereotypes linked to colours like pink. Through creative activities, we explored the emotional, symbolic, societal, and cultural significance of colour, and how it shapes the way we see ourselves and others.
In addition, What Is Pink? examined the historical and cultural shifts around gender identity, fostering deeper understanding and providing students with the opportunity to question and discuss how gender roles are influenced by colours and the language used to describe them. The project aimed to create a safe space for exploring these important topics, encouraging self-reflection and dialogue around gender ideology.
